A Ripper also called as grabber or extractor is a chunk of software that is developed to extract raw digital audio from a CD, DVD or from any other output to a hard disk. It saves the extracted audio in a compressed format such as WAV, FLAC, or even raw PCM audio. This extracted audio is then encoded with a lossy codec like MP3, Vorbis, WMA or AAC. These encoded files are more compact and are appropriate for playback on digital audio players or a media player program on a computer. On the other hand, an Encoder is a software that is used to change a bit stream or data into a code. This code can be used to serve various purposes such as compression of information for transmitting or storage, encrypting or adding redundancies to the input code, or translating from one code to another. This is generally done using a programmed algorithm, especially if any part is digital, while most analog encoding is done with analog circuitry.
